How long must I be a permanent resident before applying? +

Generally 5 years. If you obtained your green card through marriage to a U.S. citizen and have been living with that citizen spouse, the requirement is 3 years. Military members may qualify sooner.

What are the basic naturalization requirements? +

You must be at least 18, have been a lawful permanent resident for the required period, have continuous U.S. residence, have good moral character, pass the English and civics tests, and take the Oath of Allegiance.

What is the civics test? +

A USCIS officer will ask you 10 questions from the official list of 100 possible questions. You must answer at least 6 correctly. Ms. Khan provides study materials and practice sessions to prepare you.

Can criminal history affect my application? +

Yes. Certain convictions can permanently or temporarily bar naturalization. Even arrests without conviction must be disclosed. Discuss your complete history with Ms. Khan before filing — do not assume past issues won’t matter.

What happens at the naturalization interview? +

At your USCIS interview, an officer will review your application, verify your documents, test your English ability, and administer the civics test. The version of the civics test you take depends on when you filed your Form N-400. If you filed before October 20, 2025, you will take the 2008 test — the officer will ask up to 10 questions from a list of 100, and you must answer at least 6 correctly. If you filed on or after October 20, 2025, you will take the new 2025 test — the officer will ask 20 questions from a list of 128, and you must answer at least 12 correctly to pass.
